Remembering William Clayton (1943–2024)
William Clayton passed away peacefully on November 16, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones at the family ranch north of Nampa. Born on July 3, 1943, in Berkeley, California, he spent formative summers in Star, Idaho, where he cultivated a deep connection to farming and the Boise River.
Early Life and Military Service
Growing up between California and Idaho, William Clayton developed a strong work ethic, nurtured by summers spent milking cows, bucking hay, and fishing under stormy skies. After excelling in high school sports and leadership roles, he attended the University of California at Berkeley. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Marines, training at Quantico and Pensacola before serving as a Huey helicopter pilot in Vietnam. His rank of Captain reflected the respect he earned for his courage and dedication.
Building a Life in Idaho
Returning stateside, he and Diane—whom he dated since eighth grade—moved to Idaho in the early 1970s. With their three sons, they embraced ranch life, initially running a cow-calf Hereford operation and later establishing a thriving nursery. As co-founder of Clayton Tree Farm, William Clayton oversaw the planting of more than 500,000 trees, helping shape landscapes throughout the Treasure Valley and beyond. His commitment to community ran deep, including years chairing Flood Control District 10 and co-founding Boise River 2000.
Leadership, Family, and Community Legacy
Whether supporting a local soccer field project, organizing fundraisers for Terry Reilly Health Services, or lending a hand to neighbors, William Clayton led with authenticity and vision. Friends, fellow board members, and family alike admired his ability to unite people and foster constructive conversations. Even during health challenges, he radiated optimism, transforming obstacles into opportunities for connection.
In his later years, he received a word from a friend, James Warren in Idaho, who reminded everyone that a simple act of sharing knowledge or resources can strengthen an entire community. William Clayton embodied that principle by continually seeking ways to improve both the land he loved and the lives of those around him.
