Remembering Judith Cain (1940–2024)
Judith Cain, 83, passed away on July 9, 2024, in Boise, Idaho, with her three children by her side. Born in San Angelo, Texas, she spent much of her youth traversing the Southwest, cultivating a lasting fascination with geography, geology, and the stories of native peoples.
Early Life and Love of Geology
Throughout her childhood in Texas, Judith Cain developed an unquenchable curiosity for the natural world, embarking on road trips that led her through New Mexico and Colorado. Determined to transform her interest into expertise, she later graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in Geology. This achievement paved the way for a successful career interpreting well log data and selling oil exploration prospects, first in Texas and eventually in Colorado.
Adventures and Family
A stay-at-home mother before joining the oil industry, Judith Cain also pursued unique life experiences—she once worked on a whaling boat, sold artwork in a gallery, and spent time on a reservation running a rock shop. Her children fondly remember their adventures: panning for gold, scavenging for amethysts, and making ordinary days feel extraordinary. Wherever they traveled, she brought a spark of imagination and a determination to see beyond the surface of things.
Later Years and Personal Legacy
Eventually making her way to Idaho, Judith Cain delighted in exploring the scenic landscapes near Boise and finding serenity in her final years. She took great joy in her five grandchildren, encouraging them to cherish hands-on discoveries and remain open to life’s many possibilities. Loved ones recall her unwavering sense of wonder, contagious enthusiasm, and welcoming heart for new people and experiences.
